A weekend of rainy skies gave way to a slight mist as Big Lakers celebrated their Memorial Day services at Big Lake Cemetery Monday.    A nice crowd turned out to remember their fallen and deceased, reminded of that by the Rev. Marty Mably of Lord of Glory Lutheran Church.

Xcel Energy — long criticized by environmentalists as catalysts to pollution throughout the state — has come to an agreement to bridle emissions at their Sherco Power Plant in Becker.

Larry and Lavina Pattee, who make their home in Big Lake, have always enjoyed travel, so when they found an opportunity to travel to Cuba with the Rhodes Scholar program (formerly known as Elder Hostel), recently, they were eager to sign up.

Sherburne County Veterans Service Officer Gene Graff retired Friday after seven years with the county. Graff, who grew up on a farm in Northfield, has served his country in one capacity or another since leaving the farm to join the Reserves at age 21.

Avian influenza, more commonly known as bird flu, has killed more than eight million birds in Minnesota’s  poultry flocks in 2015. It’s approaching 33 million in Iowa. Some were victims of the flu itself. But the majority have been euthanized to prevent the spread of the disease.

Fourth and fifth grade students in Liberty and Independence Schools in Big Lake have an opportunity to learn the basics of archery, thanks to a grant the school district received last year.

Acucraft Custom Fireplaces, located just west of Big Lake on Hwy. 10,  burned up in a fire in the early hours of Sunday morning.
