The crash of a speeding car through the front and rear of Deb Johnson’s garage on Kilbirnie Road alerted many neighbors last Friday. One, Roger Koopmeiners, suggested it was a “ruckus.” It may have made for great home movies to a TV network.

The Sherburne County Master Gardeners Association held their annual Expo at the Big Lake High School Saturday. The event drew a big crowd to the lectures and to the vendors that were set up in the foyer. “I think we had 200 people sign up,” said Master Gardener Richard Hensel. “This is the most we ever had.”

The St. Francis River snakes through the tall grasses and budding bushes. A cluster of pines blazes a fresh green against the afternoon sky. All around, the signs of spring are awakening the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge from its long winters nap.

The Big Lake High School Knowledge Bowl Team made their first ever trip to the state Knowledge Bowl tournament and came home with sixth place medals. “Thursday night the team took the written question round, which placed them 11th,” said Faculty Coach Angela McCormack.
