After 33 years of working as a doctor in the Big Lake community, Dr. Lola Sutherland is finally retiring from clinical practice, in order to spend more time traveling with her husband, Duane Palm.

SMITTY’S AMATEUR FIDDLERS CONTEST drew 22 musicians to compete in Big Lake this year. They were accompanied by Gilmore Lee.
Big Lake Spud Fest drew 22 amateur fiddle players to Smitty’s Annual Amateur Fiddlers Contest this year. Among them were one beginner, eight juniors, four young adults, five adults and four golden agers.

LEE GERHARDSON, 47, from New London, was found dead in Big Lake near the swimming beach in 10 feet of water Monday. Cause of death is unknown at this time but foul play is not suspected.
A public works employee had quite a shock Monday morning when they went to Lakeside Park and discovered a body in the lake. The man, Lee Gerhardson, 47, from New London, had driven himself to the beach. He removed his shoes and socks and shirt before entering the water.  He never made it back to the beach.

Adopt-a-Road participants volunteer for Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and work to clean roadsides that border and bisect refuge land. This spring, from April to June, approximately six individuals, three families, and seven groups, such as boy and girl scouts and 4-H groups, volunteered to clean countless miles of roads.
